I need to redirect to login to unregistered visitors clicking on the pdf icon.

Do you mean for all pdf icons, users should be logged-in?

Even the content item is freely available?

The idea is that the article content can be viewed from the website, but for download the PDF the user having to login.

It is build-in into version 2.8.

An extra config-tab is added where you can put your own html-code with a message to the user.

A redirect to the login was not directly an option, but you now should be able to add some javascript to create that effect.

Just login with your current account and then you can download the updated version.
